My passion for the topic of migration was kind of overdetermined, given that my grandparents were refugees, my father is an immigrant, and I have been on the move quite a bit myself. It might not have been a conscious choice to study something so close to home, but the more I think about it, the less likely it seems that this was all a coincidence. The Unchosen Ones: Diaspora, Nation, and Migration in Israel and Germany
My book tells the story of how Israel and West Germany gathered “their” diasporas after the Second World War. Of particular interest is the question of how each state apparatus knew who belonged to the respective nation–how does a state recognize a Jew or a German showing up at the border and claiming citizenship privileges based on shared ethnicity with the majority population?
The most revealing were the “hard” cases and the ones who did not make it–“the unchosen ones,” as it were. In West Germany, those cases were frequently German-speaking Jews from Eastern Europe who sought recognition as Germans, sometimes after previously immigrating to Israel as Jews. My book is thus a comparative but also an entangled history of postwar Israeli and German migration histories.
Yuri Slezkine’s classic book on the history of Russian Jewry is not a work of migration history strictly speaking. But there is no Jewish history without migration, and Slezkine shows us, among many other things, how Russian Jews ended up in the US, Israel, and the Soviet Union, representing three ideological choices—liberalism, nationalism, and communism.

I particularly like this portrait he drew of early Israel, which fought for independence and statehood against external aggression and took in hundreds of thousands of new immigrants within a short period of time.
